About the Role We are partnering with a leading consumer packaged goods company in the food and pet products industry to hire a Senior Pet Packaging Engineer for a full-time, 9–12 month contract opportunity. This role will support a Pet R&D Packaging team focused on packaging innovation, cost savings, product quality, and core support for established pet food brands. The Senior Pet Packaging Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams across R&D, sourcing, quality, engineering, marketing, and operations to support packaging development projects, production facility needs, supplier trials, and commercialization initiatives.
This is a remote-eligible role requiring a full-time schedule of 40 hours per week.
Travel up to 10% may be required. Personal or agency-provided technology will be used for this assignment.
Job Description The Senior Pet Packaging Engineer will play a key role in advancing packaging solutions that support innovation, margin improvement, and manufacturing excellence within the pet food category. This position will be responsible for leading and supporting packaging development projects from concept through commercialization while maintaining high quality standards for products and materials.
Key responsibilities include:
- Build strong relationships with internal business teams, platform partners, suppliers, and manufacturing stakeholders to support trials, new product launches, and key packaging initiatives.
- Lead collaboration with cross-functional partners to identify and develop margin improvement, cost savings, and technical innovation opportunities.
- Conduct and/or manage supplier experiments, packaging trials, and technical analyses to validate and advance packaging opportunities.
- Support production facility needs by providing packaging expertise, troubleshooting, and technical recommendations.
- Develop and maintain internal and external networks to better understand customer, supplier, and business needs.
- Partner effectively with supplier resources to drive progress on key initiatives with a strong focus on results.
- Prepare and communicate technical documentation, including project plans, packaging specifications, experimental reports, financial analyses, and management updates.
- Create and modify technical packaging drawings and specifications as needed.
- Leverage packaging material knowledge to support innovation, product quality, and margin improvement efforts.
- Collaborate with and influence internal and external stakeholders to support successful project execution.
Qualifications Required Qualifications: - Bachelor’s degree in Packaging, Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of package engineering experience.
- Strong understanding of the product commercialization process, from packaging design through manufacturing.
- Demonstrated experience applying process engineering solutions within consumer packaged goods or a related industry.
- Experience creating and generating technical packaging drawings.
- Experience working on team-based projects at both corporate and plant levels.
- Experience partnering with engineering firms, vendors, suppliers, and contractors.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to effectively network and collaborate with business teams, plant teams, and external partners.
- Self-directed and motivated, with strong time management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Office 365, SharePoint, and TOPS.
- Ability to travel up to 10%.
Preferred Qualifications: - 7+ years of packaging development experience.
- Experience in manufacturing, food production, pet food manufacturing, or a related field.
- Experience with Interspec or a similar Product Lifecycle Management system.
- Experience supporting packaging development within the pet food industry.
