Salary: $101.375 (Step 01) to $131,790 (Step 10);

Duties
Help
As a Chemist within the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Physical Demands
The work is conducted in several types of environments including a typical office; warehouse where incumbent is subjected to long periods of standing, stooping, lifting heavy items, and reaching; laboratory with possible exposure to hazardous chemicals; outside staging areas from docks to beaches and wetlands; and aboard research vessels (from skiffs to deep ocean vessels). The work requires good health, strength, balance, coordination, and ability to work long hours, sometimes under harsh weather and sea conditions.
Work Environment
Most work is accomplished in an office, laboratory, warehouse, sea-going research vessel, or nearshore beach or wetland environment. As much as three months of each year may be spent on board a research vessel or in the field in an environment of extreme noise, fumes, and exposure to harsh weather and sea conditions.

Qualifications
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT : Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Chemist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. **OR B. A combination of education and experience-course work equivalent to a major as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering), including at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent of physics, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-12:
In addition to the basic education requirement stated above, the applicant must have one year of appropriate professional experience in chemistry that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include:
This work typically involves conventional methods & techniques though it requires going beyond clear precedents, and requires adapting methods to the problems at hand and interpreting findings in terms of their scientific significance. At this level, Chemists have a very good knowledge of the principles of chemistry and their application, and the ability to independently perform scientific work of considerable difficulty.

Conditions of Employment for this Position:
As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.
This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider:
- your performance and conduct;
- the needs and interests of the agency;
- whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and
- whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated.
Upon completion of your probationary your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
